Skin irritations can be hard, especially when it happens to children. My daughter suffers from eczema and it can be sore and itchy. It makes it hard for her to sleep, which means I m not sleeping. Watching your child suffer can be the hardest thing as a parent.
Over the last year, we have tried many things to control her skin irritations and the following is what I find works for her. I hope it helps you too.
Start with Lotion
Finding the right solution for your child’s skin can take some time. The best place to start to prevent and treat is with creams and lotions. I always look for lotions that contain oatmeal to help soothe irritated skin. Appling, it right after bathing, when your child’s skin is still damp, to help lock in moisture. Pat skin dry with a towel before applying the lotion or cream.
Choosing unscented cleaning and laundry detergent, fabric softener, and any other cleaners, lotions, soaps, and bubble baths. Fragrances in products that you use in your home and on or near your child’s skin, can increase irritation.
Using natural products really can help prevent skin irritations. Try and use natural organic fabrics for your child as much as you can. This can be hard to do all the time I suggest starting with using them at bath time. Ah Goo Baby 100% Natural & Organic Bamboo Washcloths, are a personal favorite of mine. They help reduce skin irritation with our 100% natural, dye free, high-quality bamboo. They are soft and gentle on sore irritated skin.
Try and use warm or room temperature water when bathing. Gentle fragrance-free soaps are best, try and go without bubble bath. Limiting the number of baths and showers from every day to 3 to 4 times a week to avoid stripping your child’s skin of its natural oils.
Sunscreen is very important for children but it can be hard to pick the right one. If you have a child with sensitive skin sunscreen can make matters worse. Look for designed for children that are an SPF 50 mineral sunscreen lotion fragrance-free. Sunscreens need to be PABA free, which can cause skin allergies.
