While most people are moved to start their spring cleaning sometime in January and February – because once the decoration comes down, it looks less festive and dustier. However, you can do a nice deep clean any time you feel like it. And, it is true, not everyone loves cleaning – but almost everyone likes the clean, comfortable home provides.
So, where do you start?
Room By Room
Rather than trying to turn into a whirling dervish and get the whole house done in one go, go room by room. The busiest rooms tend to have the most dust and dirt – even when cleaned daily. So start with the most significant task and work your way to the room that you either enjoy cleaning or the smallest one. If you have children and/or a partner, then they should be pitching in too. Move furniture and vacuum underneath it, use a mop or a steam cleaner to really bring the floor back to life. Hire a professional in to do carpets and other upholstery.
As you go through the rooms, look for signs of any infestations. They often happen in the places that we don’t see all the time. Call pest control experts to take care of the issue and then carry on your clearing.
As you are cleaning, and the time comes to get into the drawers, and into other storage, you are probably going to run into things that you don’t use, don’t have batteries, or that you aren’t 100% where it is from or what it is. Have two boxes ready – one for going in the trash and the other that will be donated. It is a good idea to donate the items as soon as possible because you can be sure on second glance people will be asked to keep things.
If you have some kitchen equipment, books or other useful items, you can sell these and make a little bit of money for all your hard work. Facebook Marketplace is excellent for selling quickly in the local area, eBay is perfect if you have some time to make sure things are posted or shipped on time. Gumtree can be great too.
The worst thing people do is that they try to do everything in one day, and while that can be super satisfying, it means that actually, it can be a little rushed. And isn’t the deep clean that you had been hoping for. If you go room by room over a week or so, you can put the time into each room that you really want to.
To make it more fun, create a cleaning playlist, or check out some of the cleaning playlists that are on Spotify or iTunes. Singing along and dancing while you clean will make it more fun, and it will speed up the process too. And, before you start cleaning, make sure that you have all of the soaps, boxes, gloves, sponges, and more ready to go. There is nothing worse than getting ready to steam the floor but being out of your favorite scented shine products!
